preface
Let me start by saying that I’ve done all that I could to make this book an entertaining read on the subject of engineering management, but let's be honest here... you're about to read a book about management. While this book is going to take you on a thrilling career journey where you'll discover if management's a career path you're interested in, how to get there, and how not to fall flat on your face as a new manager --- there's no denying that management is all about the long game. Progressing into a management position means making a conscious decision to leave the world of instant gratification behind.
In order to get the most out of this book you’re going to need to get through it all. Yes, even the boring chapters on process and delivery. I'm sorry, but if you find yourself skipping through parts of the book and thinking, “Oh my God, I’d rather be doing anything than reading a book on this topic” – then I'm going to go out on a limb here and pat myself on the back for helping you understand what it means to truly take on a career in management.
The truth is, management can be a hard, thankless job that's not for everyone. It'll require you to deal with difficult people, navigate office politics, and sit through endless meetings. The good news is it also has the potential to be incredibly rewarding. A career in management is also about building teams, mentoring engineers, and seeing them grow and develop. It's about making a real impact on the products you build and the people you lead.
While it may not be a career path for everyone, by the end of this book, you're going to know if you have what it takes.
